Self-contained Welding Hood Respirator Opinions

Looking at the Hornell/3M & the Jackson Units.................any thoughts? My buddy teaches welding via the Carpenters JATC Union Hall. His students weld (SMAW) on the red oxide primed & galvanized metal studs and they are budgeting for these units and are seeking opinions on brands, etc.

TIA, Harp

Do you have any links that you can share, I was looking at the 3M HT-748 but can't get a response from 3M of where to buy it, or even what the cost might be. I'm looking for something that also has a clear shield so that I can use it when working in my wood shop as well.

I have had 2 of the Racal units the have worked fine for years,

3M bought Racal a few years back. Racal used to make Hornel's units too.

Both of mine are set up on Speedglas hoods.

A great combination.

Does newsgroup etiquette allow self-promotion.....hmmmm! I was seeking unbiased opinions of specific brands via end-users, not a sales pitch on pricing! Don't take it personally, Joe....Just pokin' a little fun at ya! I have the luxury of buying at cost myself! (Hornell, Jackson, etc.) I would like to know success stories of brand name hood respirators you've sold.................want to make a wise recommendation to my buddy, based on feedback from folks like yourself! Never heard of the brand Ernie uses? Any info on that brand, Joe? Appreciate any help, thanks!

Harpman Please keep use posted as what and why you decide to go with a certain brand. I'm looking for something with a clear shield in front that has a welding visor that flips down and is possibly removable. Any ideas? Any ideas on cost?

Go to your local welding supply house, get them to give you literature on the Jackson ShadowAire System Hoods & the Hornell Speedglas Respirator Systems. Hornell was recently bought out by 3M, but you can see their systems @ hornell.com. I'm going to do my homework on the brand Ernie recommended! I'll get ya posted!
