Just out of curiosity is there a quick cheap and dirty way to make a straightedge for an oxy torch to make long vertical cuts? (7-8 foot long cuts)

Because i'm not sure but i'm sure with the large list of "uncuttable" things there has to be an easy sneaky way to make a straightedge that wont be affected by an oxyacetylene torch and i just cant think of it.

I'm sure the members of this group are going to point out a simple way to do this but i could use a pointer.

have a guide that clamps to you torch, and move the staight edge back however far you need that the cut does not affect the straight edge. Kinda think of one of the circle cutters for a torch slightly modified hope it helps

This may sound like a kludge, but I've used an old ball bearing, with an I.D. appropriate to fit on the torch tip (snugly), and then by clamping a piece of angle iron to the work at the proper distance from the line of cut, simply roll the torch down along the angle iron maintaining proper cutting speed. The ball bearing doesn't interfere with the cutting action and keeps the torch far enough away from the angle iron that the angle isn't interfering either. Ken.

The way they told me to do it is this: Take a small bar the length you need, let's say 1/2" square. Then tack weld a flat that's about 1/8" or 3/16" thick by 1" wide to it so the flat overlaps the 1/2" sq on both sides. You guide the torch along the edge of the flat. The 1/2" bar underneath is out of the way.

I see the pros just take anything relatively straight and lay it there for a general reference, but I need the tool I mention above.

Of course there's another issue: You need to PRACTICE restarting the cut if you loose it. Practice your restarting technique until you get it down before cutting the important stuff. I see guys restarting at the waste side and then pulling back into the straight line.

It is useful to take the time to align the preheat nozzle holes with the direction of travel, too!

I found that it allowed me to run the torch pretty much by feel. Alingment was assured by running the tip along the face of the anle, and the tip distance was consistant.

The trick is to lift the straight edge off the materiel, and therefore away from the heat. A piece of 1/4" x 3" flat bar is perfect. Then space it up off the material by about 3/4", using square tube or solid bar.

You can't make long straight cuts in Canada, there's ALWAYS beer involved.

the plan is to use cheap neodymium magnets and i need to root through my mystery metals bin for what i have in square tube. but it makes my standoffs at least partway consumable if i do goof (I'm too inexperienced to be graceful and not occasionally mess up a jig or cut but i'm wise enough to know it) and it would not be too upset if i ever accidentally wreck a standoff built to be consumable. One sentence with a few curses then i'm moving on.
