Western Safety Hoods

I see HF has the Western safety auto-darkening hood (item #47277) on sale for $60 again this month. I was wondering if this hood would be robust enough for the hobby welder. I will be doing roughly 75% mig and 25% tig. Mostly on shop fixtures, and rollcages on race cars etc.

One thing I'm a bit concerned about is the knob on the side of the helmet. Wondering how easy it would be to knock it off. Some of my rollcage welding will be done in the car at odd angles ie.. half way under the dash etc.

Any input on this hood would be appreciated.

I have two of them, they've worked very well for TIG, MIG, and SMAW. My only complaint is that the headgear is pretty much crap, continually having to adjust it, and the cover plate size is non-standard (I get the larger plates and cut them down.

If you don't want to bump the knob, just set it where you want it and then pull it off the shaft.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Also, the hood is NOT made by Western Safety, I called Western Safety and asked before I bought the hood from HF. The hood is made in China as the label on the box says, even though Western Saftey is on the front of the manual, on the 30 day warranty card, in the catalog and on the stickers on the hood. I just got mine a couple of days ago. I just used the hood today underneath a trailer and I did notice I had to adjust the headgear a couple of times. I am not rel sure about the plastic the hood is made of, you can scratch it with a fingernail.

If you have not used an autodarkening hood before like me then it takes a little while, a very little while, to get used to it. Bright light can make the hood go dark but there is a switch to adjust the sensitivity. I haven't owned this one long enough to tell if it will survive getting tossed about.

If you order just the hood then your total price will be $65.94 and they ship by parcel post. For the price and my uses I think it is a good buy until you decide you want to throw down more money for a brand name hood.

Put your hood under a bright light to charge up at least a couple minutes before you begin welding. Incandescent works great but any light that will run a solar calculator should do.
