Acrylic paint on Depron...

Building up my 1st foamie and I've spent the better part of the day working up a paint scheme and figuring out how I'm going to apply the paint and am having good luck with thinning acrylic paint 50/50 with water and using an airbrush.

The problem seems to be getting the paint to really stick to the Depron. I let my 1st test piece dry for about 2 hours before masking off the next color (3M Blue tape) and shooting it. The tape peeled up a good portion of the paint it was covering. Tried some of the low-tack white tape. Same deal.

How do you get this stuff to stick to the Depron??

I read on RC Universe to 1st wipe the Depron down with alcohol so my current test piece was wiped down with 70% isopropynol then allowed to dry for 30 minutes before applying the acrylic. I'm going to let this coat dry overnight and try the 2nd color in the morning...

I've also read thinning the acrylic with alcohol works too..

Thoughts??

Hej, Kevin I use a paint that comes in a "short can" (about twice the height of the cap). Can not think of the name of it since I do not have any left. I get it at those craft stores, like where I am it is called 'Roberts". Tip: You have to keep the paint can about 10 inches away from the plane. You have to be patient and do several coats after each other, while waiting to let the first coat dry. I did not have to do anything to the Depron Foam. HTH.

Is that the Krylon Short Cuts stuff? Not really interested in it. I want to use the acrylics I've got on hand in my airbrush.

Cleaning the Depron with isopropynol seems to have worked pretty good. last night's coat is pretty well stuck.. Didn't pull up any paint with the tape this morning so I think I'm going to go with that. A bit disappointed in the sheen with the paint tho..

Hey, I know Testor's spray paints are foam compatible.. Is the stuff in the bottles foam safe?? I've got a ton of that stuff and I know it sprays well through my airbrush. How about RC car body paints??? I've got some cool colors in that as well..

Try an acrylic wood primer/undercaot firtst.. Paint it on and sand it down to get a smooth, but not glossy finish.

I used that on EPP and it stuck very well.

I discovered the paints for polycarbonate/lexan attack the foam. Tempura works but doesn't stick worth a darn. Craft acrylics stick good but take quite a bit of time to dry completely (so tape won't peel 'em up)

Krylon Fusion sorta works but with very very light coats..

I'm headed to the LHS to check out the Tamiya acrylics this afternoon. Lots of folks have mentioned these work well and come in quite a few colors...

Is that with or without dipping sauce?

Plum sauce or hot mustard. Your choice.

So my tests with acrylic were accomplished and I decided not to bother with it. Some colors (yellow, green, bright blue) stuck really well right out of the bottle and blue masking tape didn't peel it off. Duct tape, however took it off like it was painted on to glass heheh) The black however didn't stick worth a damn. Even the 3M white (super low tack) masking tape peeled the paint off.

I tried brushing it on right out of the bottle, spraying with my airbrush (thinned with both water and isopropynol alcohol) and even dabbing it on with a small sponge.. Nothing really spectacular as far as results go and all the sprayed paint peeled very easily. Someone suggested wiping the Depron down with alcohol prior to painting and it did help with adhesion a little bit, but not much.

I finally tried Testors spray enamel. Works like a charm but is messy as hell - could they get a wider spray pattern with any worse atomization with those nozzles??? It covers reasonably well and if left to dry for 4-5 hours, doesn't come off with the blue tape when you mask it off for your next color.

So now my question(s). Is the stuff in the spray can the same as the stuff in the little jars? In other words, can I just buy the small jars, this it and shoot it through my airbrush?? The folks at the LHS don't seem to know for sure and suggest I just try it on some scrap. (Which I'll end up doing in any case, but thought I'd ask here 1st.)

Thx!
