Paint the base coat colour as normal. Let dry. Stick the masking tape down and paint over the edge with base coat again. This seals the edge of the tape and prevents any of the "top" coat seeping under. Let dry and then paint the top coat.

I use the cheap and nasty sticky tape that comes from Asia. It's very thin and doesn't stick as well as better quality brands. The thinness means it's easy to bend around large diameter curves and the inferior stickiness means it lifts off easily. I'm not sure why you have problems with paint creeping under the tape. I generally undercoat plastic models with very thin coats of automotive primer before attempting top coats and have no bleeding problems.

And/or use Tamiya masking tape made especially for model applications.

Once you've put the masking down, paint over again with either the base colour, or a matt acrylic varnish, to seal the tape.
