Fledgling flyer program

Our club is about to embark on a "Fledgling Flyer Program". At this point, the specific purpose of the program is ill defined and the plans for implementation have yet to be formulated. However, the general idea is to use club-owned equipment to introduce potential RC pilots to the hobby/sport, and perhaps to take them through training until they solo. As I understand it, we're trying to keep folks from deciding against the hobby because of the comparatively high initial investment that may be required before they get a chance to see if RC flying is something that they'd like to do.

I'd appreciate it if those of you who belong to clubs that have, or have had, a similar program would respond with your thoughts on the matter and how your club is fairing or has fared with the program. Your comments would be useful as we structure our program.

Thanks in advance.

Jerry,

One of the things that has always made me wonder is the way clubs keep insisting that potential members come to them. When all we had were the standard 40 plus size trainers it at least made some sense. But today with the park and indoor flyers we can take the hobby to the potential students. See about a traveling group that will go to schools and malls to do demos and beginner instruction. You might even be able to coordinate with a school to do a whole program for a term. One where the kids come to class in the gym several times a week and fly. A great way to introduce them and foster more participation.

But at the same time, don't rely on this as the only means. But I'm sure it will attract a lot of attention.
