Hi guys, I wanting to get a flight simulator, I like the Realflight G3, it requires more computer resourses than I have. It requires
1 gig processor and I have only 850. My next choice is FMS, I've downloaded it and played with it using the key board. It seems to do OK. My questions are concerning a radio and cables to connect to my computer. It requires a FM transmitter and mine is AM. But I have a Futaba T4YF SKYSPORT traniner that is FM. After reading some related web sites, it looks like this trainer might work. Where could I find the right cable to connect to the computer. Does anybody have any expericence with this.
I'll look deeper there. BUT most are just pointing out sales pages...I'm so damn cheap I still use Elmer's carpenters glue and thin the white stuff for the stick covered models. (30 years of building and STILL haven't found a mix that works every time for me)
The FMS homepage has links on how to make them. Problem is if you have XP your PC doesn't have drivers that will run the serial port connectors that the FMS page shows. AFAIK, there aren't any free drivers out there. Matt Clement posts adds for his cables here every now and then, and he can supply you with a driver with his cable set. I bought from him rather than some of the other sources because he's a college student putting forth a little effort to pay his bills, but that's me.
Been doing a lot of reading and looking today. I found what I need in the way of cables to make my T4YF work.
trainer cord mini square 6 to round DIN 6 (type B5R) adapter cable round DIN 6 to mini square 6 power edition USB RC simulator interface cable (type U3PBE)
I found several places to get these cables the prices range $40 to $50
If I can't find a cheaper source for cables, I'll be better off just going out and buying Dave Brown's Simstar controller for $80
Raym> Hi guys, I wanting to get a flight simulator,
I made a serial cable for use with my T4VF (older version with the round buddy connector) on FMS. The only problem you might have is if uyou use WinNT/2K/XP as I don't think they support the serial port driver.
Or go to best buy (or wherever) and get a dual analog usb game controller for around $10. Saves wear and tear on your transmitter and it's batteries and works with most any version of windows and is great for other pc games. I have no problem switching between flying the computer and the real thing, in fact the real thing is easier after flying for hours with a cheap $10 controller, makes for better training in some ways ;)
If you want to use it as a primary training tool, then FMS does a fine job inexpensively. Realflight is good for training too, but the bells and whistles are only *necessary* if you want to play at "I fly RC" on your PC.
You can pick up a professional quality FMS - Futaba compatible cable from here

Hi, UPDATE 02/08/04
FMS INTERFACES
This is a small summary of possible interfaces for FMS. Good study! The general rule : the PC needs from your transmitter the following : a) the ground b) the PPM OUT-signal How to find those 2 contacts on your buddy connector or how to find the connections in case your transmitter is not fitted with a buddy box connector, check out my website

chapter 1 paragraph 1.1
A) For Win 95-98-Millennium with FMS, 2 easy possibilities (above all possibilities that are also possible for Win 2000 and XP, see section "B").
1) THROUGH THE PARALLEL-port (LPT1) eventually with a resistor and zenerdiode, see the manual of FMS c("handbuch" in German)

or some examples on my website which I personally tested

2) THROUGH THE SERIAL-port See the manual of FMS ("handbuch" in German)

If you think you're not able to make such a cable, buy eventually one :

B) For Win 2000 and Win XP with FMS, a SIMPLE connection through the parallel-port or serial port is not working, those 2 versions of Windows are handling other protocols on these ports than Win 95-98-Millenium.
Your options then :
1) VIA PPJOY By downloading and installing PPJOY and connecting your transmitter with a simple parallel or serial interface. download :

2) THROUGH THE SOUNDCARD With smartpropo :

advantage is that it's simple to make : 1 audio-cable and a resistor or potmeter
3) THROUGH THE SERIAL PORT (Com-port) a) via an interface with a programmable IC (PIC), which is described in the directory of FMS, see .FMS\Doc\Interface\readme_en.htm on your harddisk. Or "Simple PCM" : this one has the advantage to use the power of the transmitter and not by the control-signals ofthe PC. And as such is neither depending on the system settings, neither of the used program :

5) THROUGH THE GAME-port a) with an interface which transforms the signal of the transmitter in a joystick-signal

c) or make yourself a 4-axis joystick with an old RC-transmitter, removing all electronics, replacing the 4 potmeters by potmeters of 200K (not 100K like mostly mentioned), and wiring like in :

6) Or make a partition on your harddisk where you will install Windows
95-98-Millennium. Then you can connect your radio simply via the parallel-port or Serial-port as described in the manual of FMS and start the older Windows (see section "A").
Let me echo the above recommendation. I've bought the cable and whatever drivers I needed from Matt. And after telling others here in our R/C club of him, several others also bought from him. His price is cheap enough I wouldn't waste my time building it.
