Weston Magnum question

My son has just bought one of these (not the Magnum-R) second hand and I have a question for you all! It came with no engine but it did have the mount still in place. The front is complete with just a hole/slot at the top for the engine to drop into. How do you fix it to the mount when you can't get to the underneath of the mount? Or do you fix it to the mount first and then fix the mount (somehow) to the firewall?



I could have included a piccie but I don't think NG users would like that !

What kind of mount? If plastic, drill it out and tap for the proper screws but leave the last few turns untapped. This acts like a locking nut to hold the screws in place.

If its a nylon glass filled mount, I would drill and tap for socket head cap screws. I do this with all my engine mounts. Never had one come loose, especially since I do not tap all the way thru the mount.

Thanks for the tips, it's a glass filled mount so I'll give those suggestions a try. As an alternative, I've got a one piece metal mount which usese clamps to secure the engine. I suppose I could glue the nuts to the underneath before fitting it?

I don't really like the ones that clamp the engine on. The Hangar 9 ones have two problems:

1) The clamps do not locate the engine very well. If you bump it, it can move. 2) The mount is a fairly brittle casting. It will break after not too much use.

I go with the glass-filled plastic with tapped holes that are not threaded all of the way through. (I use a taper tap, but any tap will do if you are careful not to cut the threads all of the way through.)
