2nd RFD: comp.soft-sys.simulink

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) unmoderated group comp.soft-sys.simulink

Newsgroup line: comp.soft-sys.simulink Simulink and associated topics.

This is a formal Request for Discussion on the creation of a new newsgroup called "comp.soft-sys.simulink" (not moderated). This is not a Call for Votes. This announcement is cross-posted to newsgroups whose readers may have interest in the discussion about the new group; follow-up discussion will take place in "news.groups". For more information about the process, please refer to the PROCEDURE section below.

CHANGES from previous RFDs:

  1. Added more description about what Simulink does.
  2. Minor wordsmithing.
  3. Removed "Exchange of public-domain Simulink models" from Charter.

RATIONALE: comp.soft-sys.simulink

comp.soft-sys.simulink is an unmoderated newsgroup for discussions about the use of Simulink, the interactive tool for system modeling, simulation, and analysis from The MathWorks, Inc. Simulink is useful for simulating the behavior of dynamic systems such as those that occur in cars, airplanes, and signal processing applications.

Currently, the comp.soft-sys.matlab newsgroup is used as a resource for asking and answering questions regarding all MathWorks products, including Simulink. Both MATLAB and Simulink are major platforms on which other products are based. With increased interest in modeling and simulation in engineering using Simulink, the volume of interest has increased to the point where Simulink can support its own newsgroup.

In addition, the general audience for questions regarding Simulink and system modeling differ from the audience interested in general MATLAB questions. Therefore, it seems appropriate for Simulink to gain its own newsgroup for Simulink-specific questions.

CHARTER: comp.soft-sys.simulink

Appropriate discussion in the group involves Simulink and other Simulink-related products (including Stateflow, Real-Time Workshop, and blocksets.) Some examples of topics that should be posted to comp.soft-sys.simulink:

- General questions regarding creating and analyzing models in Simulink

- Questions regarding deploying code generated from Simulink models

- Use of commercial blocksets (advice, bugs, etc.)

- Implementation of systems of interest to the control design community

- Recommendations as to hardware for use with Simulink

END CHARTER

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the process.
