Thanks for this ... but it's not what I want. I emigrated from the UK to the US last year (I still have things in boxes!), and I want to convert my UK table lamps. It seems that the only fittings I can get are metal (which I don't want) or black plastic (which I will accept if I have to). I wondered about using a bayonet to ES adaptor, but only if the US ES bulbs (E26) can be fitted into a European ES socket (E27). Hey ho!

Do they call them E26 in America? I've never seen that anywhere. I don't have any American GLS lamps, but I do have lots of large photographic flashbulbs, which old American books on the subject say fit normal (in the US) screw fit domestic lampholders. This was in the days before purpose-made flashbulbs and smaller bulbs. The caps on the bulbs are the same as the E27 type used in Europe. Maybe one was rounded up from an original specification in inches, and the other was rounded down.

I would avoid BC-ES adaptors in table lamps if you can, the adaptors are quite long, and the bulb will be quite a bit higher than it should be, this may, or may not, matter, depending on the size of bulb and shade. Also, the whole bulb/adaptor combinator will be supported by the BC lampholder, which tend to provide a rather poor support.

What sort of shades do you have, the ones that clip onto the bulb, or the ones which are held by a ring on the lampholder? If the later, tou have another problem, the ES holders are larger, and the shade will not fit.

Good point about the shades and bulkiness of the adaptors .... I've found a local source of BC 130V lamps so I'm going to go and buy some. At $5 a pop for a basic lamp that's about 10 times the price of a standard US ES bulb! But beggars can't be choosers!

if you run the 130v lamps on 110v you will get a greatly reduced light output but on the other hand a very long lamp life!!
