MN99s crawler gains a gimbal for proper FPV driving

Getting a convincing FPV view from a small ground rig is hard when the camera sits fixed to the body, staring straight ahead with no way to look around. The maker addressed that by fitting a gimbal to an MN99s crawler, and the result now works as a drivable FPV ground vehicle. The electronics are a tidy set: a Caddx gm3 v2, an Ascent lite with a vtx, and an Xfrobot headtracker. For a small scale truck that looks like a sensible pairing, and the maker reports being happy with how it has turned out so far.

The interior modifications are the heart of this build. To open up room, the maker cut away the driver seat and the center console, then replaced the floor with a flat piece of ABS. On top of that, the rubber mount underneath the gimbal was removed, a change that gained roughly a quarter of an inch of clearance. In a cab that tight, a fraction of an inch counts for a lot, in my view.

Scale touches give the cab real charm: miniature windshield wipers and dashboard details inside. Beyond the looks, the truck has structural cab frames and working front headlights. Out on the move it maneuvers along curbs, crosses road asphalt, and drives underneath a full-sized parked passenger car.

One thing left on the table: the maker has said the gimbal could have fit with more seat removal, but chose to stop there because going back to cut more away was not something they wanted to do. Given the clearance already won, that seems a reasonable place to draw the line.

That cab looks like a tight space to work in. How did the maker free up enough room inside for the gimbal? The seat and console work sounds fiddly, and getting a clean floor out of it can't have been simple.

The maker cut away the driver seat and the center console to open up room, then replaced the floor with a flat piece of ABS. Taking the rubber mount off the bottom of the gimbal added roughly a quarter of an inch of clearance on top of that. Anything beyond those steps, the maker has not said.
