Help! 1999 Chevy Tahoe lockout.

Car has been sitting in the driveway in upstate NY since early Feb and off the road listed for sale.

I had not started it in awhile, and when I went to get it going. Nothing.

Remote start does not work. I cannot unlock doors with remote.

Should I be calling a locksmith or a tow truck?

Will a Chevy dealer be my only option to get it started?

I am clueless, it is my son's car and he is out of state and no longer needs it.

Thanks in advance,

Donna

Sounds like your battery has gone dead. Open the door with a key, open the hood, jumpstart it (or replace the battery, if necessary), let the battery charge up, and it should be good to go.

(It could also be the battery in the remote, of course, but I presume you've already tried replacing that.)

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply.

Cannot open door with key. Doors must have been re-keyed.

Would you call a AAA guy or the dealership?

I am leaning toward tow company because dealers will overcharge ...

.....To your tool box to get a small pocket screwdriver. Take the back off the remote and go get a replacement battery.

I would never call AAA for lock service.

AAA will call the cheapest locksmith or tow truck they can find.

Assuming replacing the remote battery doesn't solve your problem, call a locksmith. (You do realize you're posting on "alt.locksmithing", not "alt.towing", right) ;)

Just occurred to me... This might be a dumb question, but you said that the mechanical key doesn't work. Are you SURE you're using the right key/remote?

Definitely the right question to ask.

(This also starts triggering alarm bells for me...)

Sorry about my last reply.......I should have not mentioned a business name..... Once she gets the battery out......She can go almost anywhere batteries are sold to purchase a new one....JEL

Who put it there? Your son? Someone else? You 'discovered' it there? Whose property is the driveway? Are you sure about the license no. and VIN on the vehicle? Who listed it for sale?

Something is fishy about this story. It sounds like the wrong Tahoe. Why would someone re-key the doors?

If you don't have a door/access key, you probably don't have an ignition key. This sounds like an ownership problem to me.

Is this the girlfriend's driveway or what?

As a locksmith in NYS, I typically get $50 to 70 for unlocking cars. Or Tahoes. Other locksmiths charge different prices.

Radio Shack. Bring entire remote. Let them change the battery.

Mike,

This is my son's car - he got a job out of state and is selling it. Now has a company car.

I have his keys (ignition only) and 2 remotes on the keyring.

Since I drove it a few times since he left, I know I have the right remote. We had a cold snap here and high winds a few weeks back and since then the car does not start with the remote, or unlock with it.

Will be calling someone this weekend to get it going.

Will post follow up of the damages.

So, I guess the '99 Tahoe had a valet-style key for the ignition only and not access and that's what valet key you have, and the remote access was to make up for the valet key access deficiency.

Got it.

It would be nice if it were just the remote battery and not the SUV's battery.

Okey dokey. Looking forward. Viel glueck.

99 Tahoe does NOT have a valet key.

I would suggest a locksmith to open the vehicle. Then have it towed to a local garage for repairs.
