key sticks in lock

New lock cylinder, new key. Has been there for three weeks. The back of the lock attachment says "Segal" and the front where the key is inserted has I think "TSS" on it. When I turn the back part (the oval knob on the inside) to date, the key comes out. This is unsettling.

Why are you trying to lock the lock with the key in it in the first place?

I would like for you to try again. Let me decode what I have got so far.

You have a three week old lock, a Segal, and you are unsettled when the key comes out when you turn the knob on the inside. The title of your question is key sticks in lock.

I could make many guesses as to what you are trying to figure out, but it would be a whole lot easier if you would explain more clearly your circumstances, and then ask your question.

I suspect that will be a whole lot easier than us trying to guess at your question.

Trying to remove the key from the lock after unlocking the door. This particular lock has been fixed (or another lock etc. substituted for the old one)

Couldn't remove the key from the lock but had done so for about two weeks so far. Fiddled with the back knob (where the "Segal" is.) That got the key out.

It was late, or early. And there I was wondering if I would be up all night watching the door.

OK now we are getting somewhere.

Keys will stick in locks for only a few reasons. The most likely culprits in your case is either lack of lubrication or the retainer on the back of the lock cylinder is loose.

Since you posted in another reply: "Trying to remove the key from the lock after unlocking the door. This particular lock has been fixed (or another lock etc. substituted for the old one)"

What I would suggest is to insert the key into the cylinder again now that it is out of the door, and then see if the key sticks trying to remove it.

If it does, try and use a pinching motion where you push in on the face of the plug (The part that the key goes into and turns when you turn the key.) as you attempt to remove the key. If this allows the key to be removed easily then the screws on the back of the lock plug ate probably loose. Try snugging them up.

If that has no effect, try lubricating the cylinder with a little WD40, or some Teflon spray.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.

Are you touching the key at that point, or does it push itself out?

Why not just pull the key out with your hand?

Another possibility from the description: The key can't be removed unless the thumb turn is moved. Could be the plug can't be returned to the key-remove position (theres gotta be a word for that) because of mechanical problems in the thumb turn and bolt.

From the description, the cylinder may have been replaced but not the bolt; thumb turn may also be original. Bud--

Sounds like the lock was installed incorrectly and it's capturing the key. Either the cylinder tailpiece was cut too short and it's coming out of the lockbody occasionally, or it was installed 180° out of phase. Call back the installer...

Timing would not be an issue on a rim lock where the lock was working for 2 weeks. Also on a rim lock the inside and the outside work independently so that would not explain a trapped key.

But you do seem to have good trouble shooting skills. Keep up the visualizing and you will do well.

thought..

SOME VERY heavy handed individual has put a severe TWIST in the tail piece.. we shall see when he gets it apart, I guess.

No fair - requires amatures to remember Segal is a rim lock.

Undoubtedly the latter. It seems to be fixed for now.

I'll remember that. Thanks
