How do locksmiths sell Medeco mortise cylinders with 2 keys and a card for under $20 on ebay???

Are there several different quality lines that Medeca manufactures????

not quality.. but 'availability' IF all you need is 2 keys, you are good.. need 3? then the problem might arise..

Reconditioned, older models or models that this shop doesn't want to bother keeping in stock, shop closing out Medeco and moving to another system, etc. Sometimes converting metal back into money is better than having it tied up on a shelf.

AFAIK.. I believe there is an 'aftermarket blank' available.. but you need to confirm this WITH a Medeco dealer.. --Shiva--

Yes. There are some commercial keyways that any locksmith can get both in original and aftermarket blanks and there are some that are still patent protected and are not available with out the owners card. There are also some that are available only at one dealer, and there are some that only X number of keys exist and will never be duplicated.

Seems like that is a huge number of keyway variations for one manufacturer, in addition to the other manufacturers. Do they do something different to avoid basic interchange of blanks - higher, wider?

What they do is to make a unique blank. The Medeco also has tumblers that rotate so the thickness has to be sufficient to get the point to seat reliably.

I remember they lost the patent on the old round head commecial keyway. Now Ilco makes them. A1515 for the six pin, and 1515 for the five pin.

Ilco also makes blanks for the "SKY" keyway, which also lost the patent. I bought 10 of the blanks, many years ago. Still have all 10 blanks.

Yes and if you don't have any concerns about unauthorized duplication it will be fine.
