Safe Combinations - Minimizing Combinations? Formulas?

That'll do it.

. the only trees NOT damaged were either small,

Sorry to hear about that. But if there is an upside most of the marginal trees and limbs are taken out now so next time won't be nearly as bad. FWIW I have had some marginal success in the past with breaking off the ice with bird shot when I knew it would be a problem. Stand back 30 yards or so and let fly from a shotgun. A lot of ice falls off and damage to the tree is minimal. The 'treated' trees still suffer some ice damage but not nearly as much and I haven't had any of them go completely over. You don't have to get it all just enough to take off some of the load. Wear eye protection and shoot in a safe direction. Obviously this won't work if you live in town or a subdivision.

oh yeah.. neighbors sorta complain..

Driving around after this storm hit, there was IMO VERY FEW hoses damaged by falling limbs..Only if it came straight down would it puncture a roof, OR if the entire tree fell over.. Imagine a pencil, encased in ice to about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" diameter. That was our situation, and to top it off the ground was NOT frozen.

My business since then has along with a lot of other businesses, taken a major hit. People spent $30-50 a day just on gas for the generator, plus whatever it took to heat their house. Kerosene was not cheap either, and it wiped out a lot of folks discretionary funds.. --Shiva--
