Summary of Job Content: Support the development and processing of new advanced ceramic materials for use in ballistic, aerospace, and industrial applications, and develop the specifications needed to scale up to production. This will include, but is not limited to, research, characterization, and testing of new materials. Will be required to assist in technical activities including the transfer of the advanced ceramics production information and data as allowed by Export Control regulation. Support engineers working with Operations, Quality, Procurement and Testing Laboratory to advance materials development and production. Dimensions: Complexity (Knowledge / technological) - Knowledge of materials related to ceramics and composites, testing and characterization methodologies, high temperature manufacturing/ processing, manufacturing experience, ability to productively interact with international and domestic colleagues.

Complexity (product diversity) - Focused on development of advanced ceramic composite materials using a range of precursor materials and manufacturing technologies. These include C/C, C/SiC, SiC/SiC, SiC/C, armoring materials, carbon and ceramic fibers, understanding of resin systems, CVD/CVI, reaction bonding, carbides, and silicates. Requires ability to support research, attend technical meetings, read scientific journals and incorporate this knowledge into the development of materials based on understanding of applications and customer requirements. Requires knowledge of export control regulations and ability to function within these constraints.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities includ Principal Accountabilities: Provide support in activities with SGL Technology and Innovation engineers for technology exchange, idea generation, problem solving and alignment of technical goals and objectives.

Provide manufacturing support including bringing startup and R&D programs from lab to production.

Interact with customers in developing product performance requirements, conducting technical presentations, and support final designs.

Support department activities to fabricate and develop new products and processes, improve production techniques, develop characterization and test procedures, define and document process parameters and product specifications.

Ensure processes and procedures comply with all regulatory requirements including Export Control Regulations, OSHA and internal HSEQ requirements.

Shared Accountabilities: Develop a property database for advanced ceramics by coordinating testing of materials.

Prepare and provide technical direction in the form of detailed work instructions and designs to technicians.

Provide technical and engineering support with the startup group and customers.

Support lean and six sigma efforts for production.

Develop and optimize processing parameters for high temperature processing furnaces, presses, mixers, and other equipment used to support startup activities.

Participate and contribute to technical and business development group meetings.

Participate in the generation and presentation of technical papers and reviews.

Participate in technical meetings with internal and external customers and partners

Participate in the formation of work instruction and engineering control documents for the production of startup projects.

Supports the development and transition of startup programs into productions.

Supports development of manufacturing and pilot scale production of advanced ceramic composites.

Supports marketing staff in developing technical solutions to support new and evolving customer requirements.

Supports the compliance of processes and procedures with all regulatory requirements including Export Control Regulations, OSHA and internal HSEQ requirements. Preferred Qualifications: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in engineering, industrial or physical sciences, including chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or materials.

Minimum of 3 years experience in materials manufacturing, and/or research and development.

Experience in carbon or high temperature manufacturing or equivalent combination of education and experience, and/or ceramic/composite engineering experience a plus.

Demonstrates attention to detail. Able to adapt to dynamic research driven start up projects and activities from development to production. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A self starter requiring little direct supervision. Must be able to work well in a team. Must show continuous improvement in skills related to job and must be able to share and teach expertise with others in the team. High level of computer skill and competency required, including the ability to learn new software programs and write technical reports and visual presentations.
