Develops airworthiness qualification requirements from a materials engineering point of view and establishes materials selection criteria. Performs failure analysis of components and analyzes field performance using process-microstructure­properties relationship for wide range of materials including Al-, Fe-, And Ti-based metallic alloys, composite materials, sealants and adhesives, and other non structural materials. Analyzes materials durability of materials to include corrosion, wear, environmental degradation, and fatigue. Evaluates materials and process changes, establishes test requirements, and approves/disapproves the changes. Reviews, analyzes and develops maintenance procedures-requirements of safety critical components. Presents briefings and technical papers. Communicates technical positions verbally and in memos to different organization elements. About the Position: AMRDEC IS A DEMONSTRATION LABORATORY, and positions are placed in paybands. The payband for this position, DB-03, is equivalent to GS-12 through GS-13. Huntsville is a high-tech city nestled between the edge of the Appalachian Mountains in North Alabama and the Tennessee River. The Huntsville area has one of the largest research parks in the United States, and the technical community is fortunate to have access to the undergraduate and graduate curricula of several excellent engineering universities. It is also home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, championship golf courses, museums, professional theater, symphony, sport franchises (baseball, ice hockey, and arena football) and three shopping malls. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Work involves using knowledge of aerospace materials and processes and their application in rotary and fixed wing aircraft primary and secondary structures, engines, and transmissions to successfully develop, qualify, field, and support airworthy manned rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Engineering knowledge and skills are required to develop and understand specifications and standards for the composition, manufacture and fabrication, and application of aerospace materials in support of all phases of Army aviation weapon systems.
