According to Frank Warner :

I think that it said "girth", not "diameter". Taking girth to mean circumference, that give a range of 0.6466" to 1.5915", or approximately 5/8" to 1-5/8". However -- as for the length, we're stuck with that range. :-)

A few years ago I was listening to the book on tape "Moby Dick", yah that title works with this thread. Seems like the wives all had some carved wooden 'friends' to take the edge off while the man of the house was at sea.

Never know what you will learn when you read a book.
