Good drill press at Home depot or some such?

The new variable-speed Delta drill presses have some serious problems, according to other threads I've read on this NG or on rec.woodworking (don't remember which). I'd recommend hunting around in the archives a bit looking for chatter before buying one.

The whole thing is poorly designed. They took what had been an industrial machine mechanism and tried to cheap it out for home use. Lots of problems in the way the speed control was assembled.

Nice 15" single phase unit. I think I'm going to bring it to work and use it for the stuff that the 21" drill press is overkill for, at least until I organize my home shop and clear some space for it.

I was in the HF in Fort Worth yesterday. Their bottem-end table-top drill press was on sale for $39.95.

I have a Craftsman I paid $89 for on sale a coupleyears ago. It may be slightly better than the HF, but the quill does have some clearance. Runs smooth though, better than the Chinese ones I've looked at.

I guess it depends on how much precision you want in those occasional 1/2" holes. If you are drilling SS and need accurate hole placement this might not do. But if you are drilling aluminum brackets it might be OK. And any of them is better than a hand drill motor. Texas Parts Guy

Thanks! No wonder I've never seen it--I'm never in that part of Fort Worth. Back in high school I knew a girl who lived out there--damn, I miss her. Shit, now I can go. Ah well.
