I've seen a description somewhere of adding carbon to steel in the reducing area of a side draft forge. The article claimed that a wrought iron rod would pick up enough carbon to melt on the end, so tool steel accumulated as a pile of droplets on the bottom of the firebox.

According to the same source - Foxfire books? - it is possible to get a hardened 'case' almost completely through the piece. I guess that would depend on time at temperature
