I have just come across two of my old .22 cal rifles from my childhood. They have about 40 years of neglect and going to require some major clean up. The blueing is shot. I don't mind putting time in these, but I?d rather not sink a lot of cash into them. I was wondering if there is a recommended home bluing process that I might try; or is there some more modern new process I might use to help keep this Gulf coast humidity from doing its work on the metal parts?TIAJay Cups

Anything you can do at home won't stand the test of time or humidity. Sincethe cost of a re-blue job is mostly in the labor of disassembly, polishingand reassembly, you can save a bunch by doing that yourself, then take thepieces to a gun shop that does bluing, for a dip in the hot bath. If youwant to go that route, I'll do the blue for a good price if you don't mindsending them up north to a Yankee. Remove pyrotechnic device from addy toemail me.

416R The 'R' means rifle barrel grade. I think it has a lower sulfur contentthan normal 416. It's usually stress relieved twice. Hrc 28-32.Tom

Yep, that's the stuff. I think most of the quality barrel makers get theirsteel from Crucible. It sure machines nice.Tom>
