Morse tapers please help

Has anyone got a modern exact spec for morse taper i.e.

Should tang MT fit into non tang MT sockets, I only have old imperial specs in books from the 1950s but seems they should and I have never had any problems fitting tang MT drills in non tang tailstock and headstocks of lathe.

Can anyone give me the the current specs i.e.

ISO 296:1991 Machine Tools -- Self-Holding Tapers for Tools Shanks, or DIN 228-1:1987-05 Morse tapers and metric tapers; taper shanks.

How do you go about cutting morse tapers?

Best regards

This is actually simple if you have a taper attachment on your lathe. The secret to cutting the exact taper is to use a standard to set the attachment. This is done by chucking the standard true and with a dial indicator mounted on the toolpost or compound, adjust the taper attachment for 0 deviation along its length. Since the taper is identical from size to size, it makes no difference what morse size the standard is. Steve

From Machinery Handbook:

Morse Taper..Dimensions relating to Morse standard taper shanks and sockets may be found in an accompanying table. The taper for different numbers of Morse tapers is slightly different, but it is approximately

5.8 inch per foot in most cases. The table gives the actual tapers, accurate to five decimal places. Morse taper shanks are used on a variety of tools, and exclusively on the shanks of twist drills. Dimensions for Morse Stub Taper Shanks are given in Table 1a.

According to Steve Lusardi :

Have you ever *looked* at the specs for Morse taper in _Machinery's Handbook_ or the like? The spec for Morse tapers *is* slightly different from size to size.

Now other tapers, such as the Jarno, are the same for all sizes.

Otherwise -- the rest of your afvice looks pretty good.

Finish check with a female Morse taper gauge.

Good Luck, DoN.
