I have a small horizontal mill for which I made an arbor to hold a gear cutter. The mill has an odd taper, but came with some collets, so I made the arbor to be held by a 3/4" collet. My problem is that the arbor creeps out of the collet (I ruined 2 gear blanks before realizing what was happening 8-( ).
How do I hold the arbor tighter? The shank of the arbor is not very smooth - would it help it it were? Is it just a matter of cranking on the collet closer (the closer is home made with a knurled 2" wheel)? I currently have a piece of paper wrapped around the arbor shank to increase friction. This seems to be OK, but I haven't tried cutting a gear with this fix.
Thanks, Bob
