The key point missing, however, is that the ring signal must be 20 Hz. Applying 60 Hz won't work because the modem ring detector circuits are selective so they won't false on power line leakage.

Thanks for all the input. I got it working. In the end it was simple, but I had to know what to do and get it exactly right. Know the feeling?

To fix thingmummy, simply remove the whatsit, then (follows long description about fixing whatsit. You just spent three hours removing thingummy).

I think a lot of my trouble stemmed from trying to circumvent the Win DUS, by doing the MODEM->MODEM idea. It HAS to have that damned ring tone, or emulation of it. I then tried setting my own machine up as a Server and futzed my Net connectivity, Someone here did warn me about that, I know, but of course I could not read the warning until after I had fixed the futz.
