special dial indicator

Mar 21, 2006 8 Replies

I got a teclock bore gauge at an auction with a broken dial indicator. The "gun barrel" around the indicator plunger is 5/16" not the universal standard 3/8".

I looked through all the MSC and J&L catalogs. Many indicators don't show dimensions, but the ones that do all show 3/8". Anyone know of a small diameter dial indicator.

I'll try calling tech. service tomorrow, but I think they'll send me to the high dollar indicators. I'd like to buy something under $75.

Found out I must be looking for an 8mm stem (0.315") dial indicator. They had one for $300. Still looking. Lot of nice information here, I bookmarked the site.

8mm is the standard here (6mm available too, but an exception). But 300$ NOT. I would have to pay around 60$ for 1/100 resolution and a good brand. Mitutoyo dealer near you?

According to Karl Townsend :

This suggests that you need to be looking at European dial indicators -- perhaps with eBay auctions.

Good Look, DoN.

Perhaps check out the new $20 or so digital dial indicator that Harbor Freight has? Not sure what size it is, but at that price you can afford to modify it.

Karl, consider dismantling the indicator, fixturing up the body, and turning down the shank to your desired size. If you feel funny about it, try it on a junker first.

Dam good idea.

Karl, if you can use a 1 micron +- 50 micron travel Johansen, let me know and I'll email you. Not free, but a long long way from what you've been quoted.
