I have a chance to pick up a older B&S model 2l surface grinder. It needs few bits and pieces and a good cleaning and check out. This is more of a project and learning experience for me so I don't mind getting a fixer upper.
It does not have a mag chuck with it.
My question is do you consider it a "necessity" for a surface grinder or "convenience/time saver".
I am thinking it would not be worth it if it is necessary. I would be better of waiting for find one with a mag chuck.

I have never ground anything on any surface grinder that wasn't held down by a mag chuck, with the single exception of some brass which I secured with double-sided tape. I would consider it absolutely mandatory, period.

I have a very nice mag chuck that is about 6x10 if interested?
Is the price right? Ive got several mag chucks as surplus. You would have to make up a power supply .
I also have a couple ceramic manual chucks..but Ill hang on to those
