That right the thing melted in side and stoped exsault from coming out we cut the stuff out of it and welded it shut...

Eh... OK, I'll concede that point. I believe that tampering with the contents of a cat without being a licensed recycler/maker still constitutes a federal offense, but I'd have to go hunting (and I'm not motivated enough to bother) to find out for sure.

One does not have to be fluent at speaking, reading, or writing a specific language to be intelligent. Heck, I do pretty well with American. Fairly conversant in Canuck. Ok i got your attention ,Back in the old days we could do anything to our automobiles and the feds. were not involved Todays auto we cannot put on anything without breaking a fed. law .Do you use dealer parts or off brand aftermarket parts. some aftermarket parts do not meet fed specs. That shows you how much the gov. has entered our life. So how did do on this one? I made some other post and thay did not get any attention! By the way i think i am one smart dud!

Harold, a couple of fine points: It's a "catalytic" converter, unless it's from a Cadillac, in which case it might be a "cadalitic" converter. A cadalitic converter takes a small mountain of sheet steel and converts it into a kind of riverboat with wheels. The Coupe de Hogg was a popular model.

Second, the thing does not melt inside. 'Dem little pellets, or the honeycomb, are made of ceramic. If the stuff melts, it means the underside of your car has just melted into a pool of molten steel, and the ground clearance is now zero. You can't miss it. The car will be a white-hot glowing mass.

Otherwise, I'd keep that car somewhere out in the country where you aren't likely to see many cops.

Well bud thank for the correction but it did melt inside ! It restricted the flow of exhaust gas! No more than 25 mph! The front end melted!

Whatever melted, Harold, it wasn't the catalyst. It could have been some of the metal support structure. More likely, it was a lot of crud that had pasted the pellets together, if it was a GM car.

The thin plating of platinum-group metals that are the actual catalyst is too thin to have any consequence, even if it melted.

If somebody used an octane-booster mixed in with the fuel in that engine, you could have a nasty bunch of crap on the catalyst. But the pellets won't melt until the car goes China-syndrome, and sinks into your driveway as it turns into a tar pit. By then, you'd be lighting up the neighborhood with the glow.

Seriously, if the pellets or honeycomb get hot enough to melt, you're a couple of thousand degrees F over the melting temperature of the cat cannister. The cat would melt off the car before the pellets melted.

Wrong! I was a licensed mechanic the honeycomb can and does melt. Remember their is a catalysed reaction taking place, if raw fuel gets down there it will cause more heat then you'd expect

CAUSES OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER BREAKDOWN

When a catalytic converter needs to be replaced, one or more of the following problems may be at fault.

Out-of-tune engine

A great many catalytic converter breakdowns are due to an engine that badly needs a tune-up.

Another common problem is an incorrect air-fuel mixture, or dirty spark plugs, worn-out wires or a de-synchronized timing system. All these prevents the fuel from burning completely in the cylinder.

In such cases, fuel may leak into the exhaust system and burn on contact with the catalytic converter. As a result, the part will overheat, causing the catalytic ceramic to melt.

Just curious, but did the catalyst and matrix really melt or could some other contamination have fused over the passages in the matrix?

Oops, you already said that, Ed. :)

That seems more likely than melting a ceramic honeycomb structure at temperatures that seldom exceed 1200 degrees F-- and only get that hot when there are other things wrong with the engine anyway.

Would like to know just for the sake of knowing. Do you perchance have any pictures of the ruined catalytic convertor matrix?
