Looking for a 5/8-18 helicoil kit complete with tap and tool and at least spec on drill required. Don't want to pay the $100's of dollars for one from commercial sources. Stu Fields snipped-for-privacy@iwvisp.com

Try a used machinery dealer, you might find one there. Here is the number for the one I use locally (Northeastern MA) Brothers Machinery Exchange 978

3/4-18 taps are $20.04 - $39.20 and
11/16-18 taps are $17.72 -$39.61 at mscdirect.com
If I was a Helicoil designer, I'd pick one of those and sell it for at least four times my price, which would be less than MSC retail, as part of the kit.

Nuclear weapons are just Pu's way of ensuring that plenty of Pu will be available for The Next Big Experiment, outlined in a post to sci.physics.research at Google Groups under "supercritical"
Also try your local NAPA auto parts store. They have thread repair kits in the $20 to $30 range that have the tap, install tool, and a half dozen inserts. The package will indicate the required drill needed to be used with the particular kit.
