Perhaps you'd care to mention the names of the rags you edit for critique purposes? Seems only fair.

Tom
Currently:
Mental Health Nursing Technic (for Operating Department Practitioners)
British Journal of Infection Control (until last year, now run by different company)
While in the same company I have also (but no longer) edited
The Journal of the Royal of Midwives Community Practitioner Journal (for Health Visitors)
Unless you work in a relevant health sector you are very unlikely t have come across any of the above.
Some time ago I was editor of the Modern Electronics Manual, and I a about to become editor of (IMO) the main newsstand hobby electronic magazine (I can't name it because the appointment is still commerciall confidential).
I have also been technical editor of the journal of the (former Institute of Incorporated Engineers (I think it's been gobbled up b the IEE/IMechE).
There have been other bits and pieces, but I don?t think you need CV.
Not sure what that proves, except that I am an editor. Anyway, as Dav correctly points out, we?re all entitled to an opinion on cove designs, with or without publishing experience

Out of interest can an advertiser buy the cover page of one of your magazines ? From asking round it appears that with the regular ones we see on news stands the cover page is never for sale and is an editorial or management decision.
Interesting that your experience has been mainly in the fields of captive subscribers, with taxpayer probably the picking up the tab one way or another, whereas MEW has to survive in the real world of supplying what the consumer wants, which, funnily enough, was the majority view of the MEW content under discussion.
Good luck then with your imminent career change...
Tom
You really know what you're talking about don't you Tom - not one o
them is government funded - directly or indirectly.
They all face very severe financial tests, different to MEW, in som ways easier in some ways much harder. And if you think you can jus print anything and not face a 'consumer' backlash then you're even les informed than I had thought

Hmmm, Did I really say that Matt? Because of your blue pencil, one would have to refer to the OP. Your editorial way, Matt? Anyone who subscribed to the magazines you edit, wouldn't be doing it because of your editorial flair, it would be for professional reasons and as such, would be a tax-deductible. Remind me again, who ultimately funds the government and tax deductions? >
Tsk, tsk Matt, as I recollect, you posted a criticism of MEW and never got a favourable response, how informed was that?
BTW, I always thought the "balanced" editorial way when responding, was to quote that, to which one was responding?
Tom
But do anonymous opinions have any value?
Steve
Well, as someone who always posts on usenet under a pseudonym I would hope that some anonymous opinions have value. In fact one of the advantages of Usenet over other forms of communications are that it is harder to judge a person by anything other than the quality of their posts.
Any in any case note that it is generally not obvious on Usenet that eg John Smith really is John Smith rather than, say, Peter Jones. And what difference does the name make anyway ?
I think if the opinion is not contentious then I agree - but making a contentious point from behind a pseudonym, well I tend to ignore those.
The people whose opinions I take most seriously are those I can eMail, ring up ie are real.
You've probably seen the old internet joke about "on the internet they don't know you're a dog" where there is a dog typing away on IM? Real name, real eMail address takes that doubt away.
Just my opinion!
Steve
