Ooh, you got one of the posh ones! Mine doesn't have a heater so the cycle can take a while longer. I keep meaning to find a source for printed adhesive flexible heater pads so I can pop one on either side of the tank. In a previous job we used to buy these from a company in Sweden to stick on the back of commercial vehicle mirros for demisting, but for the life of me I can't remember who they were. My tank size is about 13" x 5" x 6" so mirror heaters would fit on quite nicely.

Do you use yours for injector cleaning?

I have an ultrasonic tank about 7" x 5" x 5" you are welcome to use if you are near central Kent.

How about those heating pads you can buy for reptile housing? They are available in pet shops and the like in sizes from a few inches square up to several feet. I'm not sure what sort temperature they reach (I guess about

30 degrees C to keep your average creepy/crawly/slimy thing happy).

Just a thought.

Anything that needs it really, we bought it originally for PCB cleaning, but the solvents went out of use so we dropped using it at the factory. Just keep it at the home workshop for the occasional job now.

Thats a thought. Do you know if they come in 110V? The tank is an ex-MOD unit and runs off a transformer, so ideally I would like to run a switch for the heaters off the same power supply.

There's a chap on ebay in germany called "homeshop-berlin" who sells I think they are called heissbandages, or heat bandages. Usually go cheapish, available in different wattages and sizes. Has a few for sale most weeks.

Were you enquiring about building an ultrasonic cleaner? Both of mine operate at 17 kilohertz, using what appears to be a transistorised multivibrator, driving two ceramic transducers. The transducers are epoxied onto the bottom of the tanks. The tanks themselves are stainless steel containers usually used to hold condiments, gravy etc. in restaurant kitchens. here on the left coast of Canada, anyone can buy them at restaurant equipment firms.

I expect that many of the people on this NG could easily design and build an ultrasonic cleaner much cheaper than buying one!

I'm sure they do but you might have to place special order or source one from abroad (they're pretty light so shipping costs should not be an issue). Alternatively, I guess you could use some sort of wizzy relay arrangement to switch the 240V onto the heater pad when the 110V was switched to the tank.

I was thinking along the lines of a tape deck with one of these sounds recorded from here in the zip file.

there is a 17,000 hz in the file ..........

and then amplifiying it and sending it thru speakers attatched to the side of the tank. probably destroy the speakers...that's why they are using tranducers perhaps ..I dont know. I dont know who the hell sells ceramic transducers or if they are cheap....what household object or electrical gadget has these transducers from which I can salvage them...........and is it then still a matter of using the tape deck and amp.

It's a low power resistive load with sufficient hysterisis - so put a diode/rectifier in the heater circuit.

A 1N4005 (1A 600V) costs about 10p, good for up to 50W - a 1N5406 (3A 600V) will do for up to 150 W, and costs about 20p.

No heatsinks or fans will be needed at these ratings, but try not to enclose them too much - give them some space and they will last forever.

Sorry, my brain farted (it is 6 am), and sloppily too. Please ignore the above.

Fish tank heaters might be problematic - they don't have a lot of power, they are designed for a temperature around 30 C, not 90 C, and the glass might not stand the ultrasound very well.

Are you going to use a thermostat? The ones used for domestic hot water cylinders should work well, about a fiver on ebay. Choose one with a big range, some only cover from about 60-80 degrees, others go from about 40-95.

You'll need at least 500 W to heat the tank from cold in any reasonable time, and it might be an idea to use some insulation (and a lid). You get about 1/4 the power when running a 230V heater at 110V, so a ~2.5 kw electric kettle element should do the job nicely. This should be reasonably easy to fit.

One problem might be that the transformer won't provide an extra 500 W.

I think that the frequencies involved are generated specifically for the type of transducer, and while not specially 'clever' waveforms they are nonetheless generated to suit the application.

The transducers were bl**dy great blocks of crystal, not little bits, and they weighed a couple of pounds each at least. They must have been made for the job, and had silvered or silver plated areas to solder the leads to that came from the amplifer.

2 X EL34's would give 30+ watts easily, there was an ECC83 and maybe another valve in there, which was why they were so popular as the basis for a valve amp. Add an EF86 and you have a Mullard 20W amplifier.

This was 1962-1963, a lot has passed under the memory bridge since then, but these were a commercial Mullard product at the time.
