Gluing Belts on Lathe

My belt on my smart and brown 1024 is cream crackerd ... been onto smart and brown for one ...Bracehand ltd and it is =A368 plus the vat plus delivery ...probs =A3100 total .. ouch

but what gets me ...is they also on top of that want another =A328 plus the vat for the three part glue.

three part, because its a composite belt, leather and nylon ...you need a different glue on each face plus the catalyst ...

does anyone know a cheaper place for the glue ....

and the belt ...do you think that it is expensive.

any suggestions welcome.

Their EPFL01 flexible Epoxy is recommended for both nylon and leather. There is also universal bond pack that copes with a wide variety of plastics even including PTFE.

I don't know how the stuff compares in strength with the S&B three part but I used 60 minute epoxy on the leather belt for a 10" Southbend for many years without problem.

The nylon to nylon joint will be the important bit as this carries most of the tensile load so the universal pack may be the best bet.

Hello Mark it's not that expensive considering the type of belt it is and the way it is manufactured they last for years I've done two one on a 1024 and one on a Model A, have they told you also that you need a need a clamp to glue it all together and they used to charge you for hiring that. There was another company years ago around the Hemel Hempstead area I think they were called Graco don't know if they are still going but there was not alot of difference in the price this is the problem when you get into a quality type machine the spares get expensive. Best of luck Colin

If the flat skivved type of belt is ok, try these:

From my experiences, you don't need the hot press to cure the glue. All it does, from my memory, is speed the cure process, it still cures ok if clamped up between a couple of blocks of wood, and left overnight Bob

There are polyurethane glues used in woodworking. The Gorilla glue comes to mind but that is in the states. Is the nylon some sort of webbing? I know gg works fine on leather to wood, leather to rubber, and suspect it might be fine working webbing to webbing. It does like to expand just so you know.
