Help! My head fell off.

At least, the hide head of my Thor rawhide and copper hammer did. I went into the garage today and the head was lying on the floor. I've been able for several years to spin it round in its socket, but not remove it, so I've always imagined that some kind of clip in a groove was involved, but no. The socket is parallel, and smooth sided. So, is it a case of it has dried out and shrunk, and if so, will soaking it in water or some other fluid help to secure it?

I have always found that a good soak in Scotch puts 90% of problems on the back burner. Richard

Works the same on this side of the pond. Employing it as we speak.

Soaking might make it swell up to fit a bit better, probably worth a try. The recommended method for replacement is here and requires a press and a 'combination tool' to open the socket to take the new rawhide face and then close it again!

Assuming the rawhide face is still in good condition, I would use a good quality epoxy resin to fix it back in the hole and clamp in a vice for 24 hours for it to dry thoroughly. To strengthen it, I'd drill a pilot hole in each side of the head and use wood screws to keep it secure.
