How to remove the carriage from a Super 7 ?

I need to strip and overhaul top slide, cross slide and carriage. How do I get the carriage off the end of the bed ?

Surely with a top slide and a cross slide, it has to be a sledge not a carriage!

Apart for all the jolity:-

Remove the leadscrew handwheel (if fitted). Remove the fiducial indicator for the leadscrew handwheel (if fitted) Remove the right hand leadscrew bracket.

Wind the saddle and apron off the bed.

Or

Unscrew the apron from the saddle. Remove the half-nut handle and the pins in the half-nuts. Remove the lower half-nut. Move the saddle away from the apron.

Remove the apron. Remove the under-bed retaining plates, retaining the shims in their relative positions.

Lift the apron off the bed.

IIRC I have used both techniques on my Long bed ML7 (same carriage as S7).

Thank you Mark. That's exactly the information I needed. My OP was written in a rush and could have done with a bit of explanation. After aspiring to own a lathe for most of my life I have just bought (rescued!) this early Super 7 (S/N 00416 SK) with Q/C gearbox from storage in a devonshire barn where it has suffered years of neglect, and will need to be stripped and refurbished. I have purchased a manual, and also Ian Bradley's book, but whilst the manual gives details of dismantling one or two bits like the topslide/base unit, there's no complete dismantling procedure anywhere I can find - hence my post. The lathe was delivered to my garage floor, and I want to remove enough parts to make the lift into the workshop and up onto the stand a lot easier. The motor pulley was siezed onto the motor shaft, so to remove the motor I was forced to drill the pulley off (sigh, £30 for a new pulley) Now I know how to get the carriage off the final lift shouldn't be too difficult.

I have a problem removing the Simmonds nut from the end of the leadscrew. I can't see a way lock the leadscrew to enable the necessary torque to be applied to the nut (there's no leadscrew handwheel). I thought of locking the carriage to the bed with its locking bolt and then engaging the half-nuts, but that seems a distinctly dodgy thing to do. There isn't enough room to get a machine vice (with soft clams of course) onto the exposed part of the leadscrew, which is the way I'd do it otherwise. What is the best way ?

Put a soft metal [ alloy etc ] sprag into the gears on the other end and let them jam.

Or a lump of wood. Fingers aren't recommended unless they belong to managers of HSE inspectors :-)
