Hello all, Was reading ME V98 p502, and article by K.N.Harris "Making Hand-Wheels for Models" in which he gives his solution to protecting bright steelwork from rusting. He says wipe over with a greasy rag, NOT an oily one, as it is of little use in this instance. The wheels where 3/4" dia with spokes of 1/16" dia. His solution is as follows: "Take a piece of soft linen and wrap up in it a lump of vaseline, knead it and knead it until the whole fabric is completely impregnated; add a few drops of sweet oil and thoroughly knead it again. Keep in tin and use to wipe over bright steel work; use with care and discretion . . . . " Sweet oil? Essential oils maybe? Any suggestions? My solution to long term rust prevention is to spray the part/s with chain oil. Pretty tenacious stuff. Reading these early issues of ME certainly whiles away the time in a most agreeable way.
