Red gunk

It's official - I've spent more on tools and accessories to go with my lathe and mill in the 3 months since I bought them than they cost in the first place! Prompted by another courier type chap today muttering something about b****y heavy that! Get to the point - who said that? OK so I've got all these new goodies - faceplate, 4 jaw, change gears, travelling rest, quick change tool post (I know, I'll never have enough holders!) all covered in this red protective crud. Suggestions as to best, quickest, least disgusting method of removing it all before I oil up and start playing.

If it's something like Crocel (thick oily plastic dip) then a craft knife to slit it, then peel it off.

WD40 (or equivalent) and lots of rags.

If its the usual chinese/taiwanese shipping grease rather than a semi-flexible dip then the laziest/quickest way is to locate a friendly local engineering works or engine reconditioning place with a hot degreasing tank. Exchange a few beer tokens and every trace of grease will be gone.

Failing that, a long soak in gunk/paraffin, followed by a short dunk in hot water and then a light wipe with an oiled rag is probably the cheapest.
