12v vs. 24v Globe gear motors running at 12vdc: what's different ?

I have noticed that when ordering some gear motors such as those from Globe, than you can specify whether it is for 12vdc or 24vdc, with everything else being the same. What exactly is the difference in that case ? Is it just that the winding is built to take better advantage of the intended 12 or 24 vdc ?

With that in mind, if I come across some 24vdc motors on eBay or a garage sale, would running that motor at 12vdc be less efficient than if I ran the same motor that was factory configured for 12vdc ? What is the trade-off, typically, in such an instance ?

Is there typically anything that I could alter myself to make it more suited for 12vdc (or 24). ( When I ask this I am thinking about how some stepper motors can be wired as unipolar or bipolar, etc. )

Thanks ! JCD

The wire in the windings for the 24 volt motor is thinner but longer. The cross sectional area of the wire is half as much, but it is twice the length, so you get double the number of turns. The total volume of the windings is the same.

If you run a 24 volt motor at 12 volts, you will not get much torque or speed. But your motors will run cool, and last a long time.

The voltage ratings on the motor are nominal, and there is nothing wrong with running a "12 volt" motor at 24 volts, as long as you do not run it continuously or with a heavy load that may stall.

That explains it perfectly to me! Now I think I understand how essentially the same size package can have different voltage requirements: more turns = more EMF longer & thinner wire = more resistance so you need more voltage

Right ?

Right.

The real limits on DC motors are current (amps) and power (watts).
