Yes, the point is to support the igniter and prevent it from dropping down.

Just think enough to support the igniter. Pretty thin.

1/16" works great (since 1972 :).

It is ejected during the ignition ramp-up, typically within the first

14ms.

The reason to use a thin dowel is so the Kni is not very substantially modified thus preventing overpressure on any reasonable motor design.
