"Scouting" is a general term for all programs of the Boy Scouts of America.

Webelos: Adult Leaders are "Webelos Den Leader / Assistant". Webelos are 10 years old. Webelos are the oldest group in the "Cub Scouts" program, which consists of Tiger Cub, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos, in that order, ages 6,7,8, 9, and 10. Each of these are headed up by a primary and assistant "Den Leader". Which acts as a parental/leadership role that decreases as the young boy advances. The main person over the whole Cub Scout program is the "Cub Master".

Scout Troop: Scouts are 11 to 13 with the 11 year-olds making up the "new" Scout patrol. The leader/assistant of this group is called a "Scoutmaster", and acts mostly in an advisor/counselor capacity, in a properly-run "Patrol Method" troop, where the boys actually ( or in theory) run the program. This is true also for the remaining group(s); the leaders take an ever decreasing role as the young men increasingly take on more responsibility and become leaders themselves. The old "Varsity Team" and "Explorer Post" groups of

14-15 and 16 to 18 have evidently merged into what is now the Venturing Crew, which officially covers all young men from 14 to 20 years of age, with a "Crew Leader" and his/her assistant. Different sponsoring organizations may have slightly modified structures, but are essentially the same.

The ranks within Boy Scouting are:

Boy Scout (basic beginner badge) Tenderfoot Second Class First Class Star Life Eagle

Additionally, there are something like 130 different "Merit Badges" that can be earned. Specific to this News Group might be

"Space Exploration" which covers model rocketry "Computers" "Electronics" "Engineering" "Model Design and Building" "Photography"

Some other possibilities might include "Safety", "Weather", "Woodwork", and "Cinematography". If the Troop does campouts at rocket launches, then another great one is "Astronomy", as many rocket-flyers are also interested in the stars.

I am interested in the 9 inch paper plate model plane... can you post more details on this construction?

IMHO, _any_ school should be allowed to expel an excessively disruptive student. (Of course, this causes an interesting paradox with respect to the concept of "compulsory education"... you would then have a kid who was both forbidden _and_ obligated to attend school - and I'm sure some would intentionally behave badly in order to be expelled because they didn't want to be going to school anyway!)

I am not exactly sure what it is you are trying to imply with the link. But I feel compelled to say I don't agree with the link's ad. Many here have spent time in the military service... and so have I... 9.5 yrs...

At this moment, I speak for myself. While in the service, I never expected special treatment, special pay, special anything... after all, it's called service. Just keep my family fed. A healthy life insurance policy would be the best thing, because then my family will still have means, if I were to be taken out. The attitude I gather from the ad is IMHO, garbage, and defies the proper spirit which should be had in service. It is a political statement, at best. At worst, it degrades the memory of those who have given the ultimate in the past... for better or for worse. I was in the service during Bush 1, and the related Gulf war. And I believe we will find, by and large, that the extreme majority of service people that have actually gone to that arena will say that we should be there.

Actually some of my military friends emailed to me. They didn't post a message in their email other than this link.

I've never been in the military(bad knee's) but my military friends have consistently reminded me that military spending doesn't always go to weapons and such but salaries as well. Personally, I didn't view it as anti-war or anything, but more viewed it as a 'hey, we should be treated better' or something there like.

Just make expulsion 2 weeks in a labor camp. Then 4 then 8, etc. They can pick up trash or pick weeds for a while.

If I had a refractor that size I'd be pleased. ; )

The nice thing about Dobs is that something that size is quite affordable.

Probably the AMA Cub. They build them every year at the Chicago Hobby SHow for the make it Take it. IIRC you can buy packs of them from Sig.

I'd be interested in this too, if someone has a pointer. I remember perhaps

2 decades ago they published a HLG plan that was just a hard balsa stick, plus 3 foam lids from McDonald's Hotcakes breakfast. I built one and it flew quite well. I need to replace the wings, as they've folded over years of abuse.

I've heard that is actually not uncommon - in many places, the Catholic schools seem to offer a better education than the local public schools at a substantially lower tuition than many other private schools, and are perfectly willing to accept "non-religious" students.

I'll see if I can scan the pattern. It's a slightly delta flying wing with a vert. stab. if I remember right, and uses a penny stabilize it.

Bob, we have several Jews in our Catholic school. They attend the religion classes but not to indoctrinate but rather to learn more about Catholics. I'm not Catholic myself and in fact, have serious trouble with some of the doctrine, but, we do provide an above average learning experience and a caring staff. No Jew that I've known over the last 13 years at the school has ever said that Catholicism was forced on him/her. What they say is religion classes suck. For some reason I don't imagine that's too far from true. :)

They do, believe me they do. Those classes are boring with a capital B

At our local public high school, kids have to do an outside project before they can graduate. Two of the kids (one protestant, one Catholic) who wanted to become teachers, decided to teach a CCD class. Projects are evaluated by teachers and community volunteers.

The other CCD teachers (all of whom were at least 3x the age of the two high school students, including a few nuns) were tremendously offended by this.

By the end of the year, the other CCD instructors had the high school students do seminars on how to teach CCD class.

I believe the high school students turned their project in at the beginning of their Junior year. Their documentation included a couple

4 in. thick ring binders of lesson plans (bursting at the seams, all created by the students), photographs, and Power Point slides. Their presentation made you understand why their classes were so popular.

Needless to say, we passed them.

I'm in my 25th year of working for chemical companies. I get 5 weeks vacation, work from 7:30AM to at least 5:00PM daily and typically work through lunch while scanning RMR...like today. I'm a multi-tasker. ;-) I also used to travel to customer plants on short notice, over weekends and have made 3 trips to Europe in the last 4 years on company business, always traveling on weekends. Of course, having 25 years of experience, 14 as a manager, I make slightly more than $26K/year. >;-) There are other RMR readers that travel internationally every week for their jobs and one that I know personally that commutes between Detroit and CA every week and has been doing so for years. Believe me, that takes its toll on you.
