My 13 yr. old sister is currently hobbyless. She needs something to fill up her free time (and her Xmas list). This year she hardly had any items. She's not real athletic, nor is she a typical 13 yr. old that likes shopping every day. What kind of hobbies are out there???
Does she like the outdoors? Does she like the water? Does she like rocket launches? Is she a homebody? Does she like to build? Does she like to photograph? Does she like to think things through? Does she like nature? Does she like collecting? Is she urban, suburban or rural?
Looking back maybe I should do the options instead of having you post too much about the kid. My daughter was very artistic, for her it was simple, I bought her an easel and large sketch pad. But she ran out of paper and started doing the walls of her room, If she enjoys the outdoors, depending on where you live, there are photography or hiking or camping options Water? Fishing (my daughter was an avid fisherperson) helping local Riverkeepers.... Rocket launches.....who wouldn't like them? :-) If she's a homebody there are tons of things to spend time with from drawing to puzzles to designing games. If she's a builder, robotics come to mind as well as woodworking (though maybe not for a young lass) Photography can be incorporated into other interests----outdoors, sport events, people, cityscapes Puzzle design, game design, electronics Nature can be hiking, photography, volunteering with trail cleaning etc Collecting is pretty basic depending on interests Location, location, location can be the biggest influence.
How about ham radio? Lots of things to do in ham radio and can be combined with...rocketry...fishing...etc. A hobby for a lifetime. I have been in it since 1976.
Astronomy. There've been an awful lot of things happening lately, too, such as the Mars opposition, and on New Year's Eve Saturn will be the closest it's been in about 60 years.
I've always been 'interested' in astronomy, but never got a telescope until last Christmas. It's an amazing thing to see the rings of Saturn, or the red spot of Jupiter, with your own eyes, through a telescope. It's far different than seeing it on TV, or in a magazine or book.
Have you ever taken her flying with you? Both of my daughter's love rockets. One became a CH-46 pilot only because the Osprey still isn't ready. The younger one is thinking about learning to fly too and builds much better rockets than her boyfriend.
