Airfix Hawks

Has anyone seen or heard anything on the release of these kits. The advance publicity suggested the end of July for the 1/48 scale BAe Hawk T.1 and 100s, and a revised version of the Mosquito, but down here in the Styx nothing has yet been seen.

Mind you, I did see an amazing bit of 'retro modelling' in the local shop this morning - a repop (in a plastic bag with a folded paper header carrying the instructions) of the original Airfix Spitfire from the 'fifties for all of £3.50. Useless to build but entertaining nonetheless - wonder if we'll see a Gladiator in tacky silver or DH88 Comet racer in garish red?

snipped-for-privacy@aol.com (DBatt56523) waxed lyrical news: snipped-for-privacy@mb-m22.aol.com:

A *very* small number were airfreighted in ahead of the slow boat from China and distributed to Argos earlier this week, probably less than three dozen in total. Very doubtful if there are any left but if you are close to a large branch of Argos you could try I suppose. Otherwise you'll just have to wait for said slow-boat to get here. There are sprue pics knocking around on the web, go to ARC's discussion group and look for the Airfix Hawk thread, there's a link in there to some of the sprues and decals.

Surely you jest? Argos got some ahead of Hannants and the like, let alone Airfix themselves?

From the discussion on ARC, Airfix has a contract to supply Argos with the kit by this weekend. Because the bulk is on a slow boat trundling across the Pacific from China right now they flew 50(?) kits over to satisfy the terms of the contract and avoid late delivery fines.... That's my take on it anyway.

Wish I was, but it was a contractual stipulation that Argos get them by a certain time or penalty clauses came into effect. And this indeed happened.

That is a damned shame. How many modellers go into Argos of all places looking for the latest release of plastic kit, and how many kits would Argos sell compared to the 'proper' model shops that are left plus the toy shops with some model kit racks? Were it the last couple of weeks before Christmas and these were 'bumper gift sets' I'd accept the logic but I thought these releases were "just" (albeit vastly overdue' new releases from Airfix.

Incidentally, any idea if there's any connection or deliberate conflict between the Airfix Hawk and the Italeri Hawk T.1A in 1/48? The latter presents the tasty options with gun pod and sidewinders on the box top in lieu of the dead sparrows.

I've been through the latest Argos catalogue and I can't see the kit anywhere. Anyone know which page I should look on?

I just did some searching through the Argos website - no results for searches on Airfix, Hawk, Model Kits etc.

I would guess that their website would be more up-to-date than a printed catalogue (lead times etc) - but it ain't appeared yet.

I suppose you will have to keep visiting the stores and look at their 'latest additions' flyers.

On behalf of this NG, I just visited Swindon Argos during my lunch break..........

It isn't in the Argos catalogue, it isn't in the 'Additions' catalogue - nor is it in any of the flyers that I could see.

I then went to Customer Services - and after they had looked at me as though I were an alien, I finally got through to them that I was enquiring about an Airfix model kit of a Hawk - and that Argos apparently had exclusive first rights to it and no, it wasn't in their catalogue and yes, I was sure it was Argos.

I think I made the mistake of saying that I had 'read it on the internet' !

Anyway - the upshot is - keep going back to check for new arrivals !!!

They have the same system in Russia, select an item, get a slip, go to a pay desk, pay, collect item.

But everyone over here seemed to think it was an archaic system.

Odd really...........

Oh that Argos! I've been following this thread, with various strange comments about 'Argos' not really deserving to have first examples of a kit, without realising it was that Argos. The idea of that Argos selling plastic kits just seemed so outlandish I thought it was a different Argos!

And Brand Names and Century Catalog Sales in Western New York, both now gone. Brands Names folded two years ago. That store had good values, but limited in what they sold. Gas grills yes, propane, no. Stuff like that.

Some did, we had one locally that went out in the early 80's, but the one in another town went out at the same time, but came back in the late 80's and lasted until a few years ago, around 1999 or so.

I don't remember seeing a MW catalog store, I've seen a few Sears ones in small towns where you pick up your order from the catalog or get parts or something.

I'll agree with the other poster, I always thought it was an odd way to do business, you don't let the customer see the merchandise, just pictures of it.
