"Dragon and his Tail" in 1/48th

Well, having just received some very lovely decals from Mr Mike Grant (take a bow, Mike, they're superb!), the quest is now on for a plane to put them on. I think the Monogram B-24J should be easy enough to find (Scale Modelworld's a comin', and there's the Kingkit Open House, too, and I know they have them). My question is, is there anything else I need for a Dragon, like one of those Cutting Edge Ford nose turret conversions? Was she a B-24J as realised in the standard Monogram kit, or is it gonna end up like my Bit 'O' Lace experience, where I discovered I needed a ProModeler kit with the Cheyenne tail gun?

TIA,

Best regards, Matt

Just curious.

Do the decals that you are using have the art work on the right side only or on both sides?

IIRC the only real difference was that the rectangular observation window on each side of the nose was bulged on the actual a/c.

As one of the previous posters writes you will need bulged and bigger observation windows for the wartime Dragon as can be seen on the picture below.

restored Dragon is a different aircraft and has windows as included in the kit as can be seen on the picture below.

both cases you will need to reshape the nose turret fairing a little with the aid of plastic stock for example.

If you need the bulged windows you can have mine for free if you e-mail your address to snipped-for-privacy@SPAMwanadoo.nl (remove the obvious) These are vacuform leftovers from the Falcon and Koster conversion kit. I'm not sure if you also need the 'high hat' top turret for the wartime Dragon. If so, you can have that one as well.

Bassie:

Thanks for posting this. I have an acquaintance who claims the original Dragon was scrapped overseas in 45. I knew there was a picture of her sitting in the Kingman, AZ, boneyard somewhere. Incidentally, the "new" Dragon was at Westminster, Maryland a few weeks ago giving rides at $400 a pop. Was tempting. I nearly wrecked my car while driving down Route 140 past the airport and here comes a B-24 floating in over the highway on final. I hadn't heard about the visit. She has there with the Collings Foundation's B-17.

Here are a few more pictures of the original aircraft and a very nice in-flight shot of the Collings aircraft.

pictures were posted not that long ago at Hyperscale by David O. I believe. These kind of interesting photographs end up in my digital archive as reference material and come in very handy when needed. If you have that kind of money Bill and if you can miss it, I would certainly consider buying a ride. I have been lucky enough to have had a ride in a Catalina once. I must say it was an unforgettable experience. Whether it is worth the money or not is a personal decision, but it may be a once in a lifetime chance. By the way, after having another close look at the pictures I'm now very positive that the original Dragon had a 'high hat' type top turret.

I am coming in on this late so pardon my dust if this has been discussed. I had some correspondence years ago with a guy whose Dad was on Dragon. According to him, Dragon had a tunnel gun as opposed to a lower turret.
