I am wanting to build the Hobby Boss 1/72nd F4F-3 Wildcat for my young nephew. Now, this kit is really an F4F-4...but what all is needed to do a minor conversion into a Dash 3? I know about the non-folding wings, and the two guns per wing, but my questions regard the engine cowling.
The kit cowling has the eight cowl flaps (6 above and 2 below) as well as the air scoop at the top. The engine detail impressed into the cowling, seems to be that of the P&W R-1830-86 engine, due to the presence of the two magnetos. I have read that late F4F-3s had this engine, but *without* the air scoop at top? Is this correct? (And if so, why was this scoop present on the Dash 4 models? Why the differences?)
Also, what Dash 3 variants were painted in the colorful pre-WWII color scheme? Was this late model, with the -86 engine, seen in the yellow wing scheme?
