I think he is having a bit of euphoric recall. The very first model may have had a problem but the later types had tremendous penetration. Why the armor thickness of a tank mattered to a guy who went into combat protected by a couple of layers of cloth escapes me. . .

There are 1/35th scale kits available from Dragon and Zvezda. The Dragon kits have finer detail, but the hull is about a quarter inch too shallow, and the wheels are undersized, so the whole vehicle looks a bit squashed. The Zvezda kit has less finesse in suspension details, but the hull dimensions are right on the money. Dragon's has very good individual link tracks, while Zvezda's has mediocre, stiff, vinyl tracks. I kitbashed both kits together for my model, using the Zvezda hull and turret improved with various bits from the Dragon kit. Dragon did four versions, an IS-1 (or IS-85), an IS-2, and two IS2m versions, one with a cast lower hull front, and one with a welded lower hull front. The last kit is also offered as Chinese tank from the Korean War period. Zvezda just offers a late war IS-2m with an antiaircraft MG on the cupola. Gerald Owens

I would think the detonation of 3 lbs of HE 10 feet from where I was sitting would be a problem whether my perch was a rock or an IS-2. Besides, the most common Panzerfaust could penetrate the IS-2 as well as a T-34. Apparently it was something psychological.

maybe, he seemed certain they couldn't penetrate the front. but he talks about using captured ones on tigers....
