"models.scale"

Going through the topics on this otherwise fine news group is getting a bit annoying, since there is so much stuff about politics. I see absolutely no reason why politics should be discussed here. Are there any moderators on this group? Am i the only one bored with this?

No. It's 'self-moderated' via the judicious use of one's newsreader's kill filters and the 'delete' key on one's keyboard.

Ookay..i guess i have to get a fully functional version of the newsreader, with the filters.

If only we could get rid of spam entirely, now that would make newsgroups less annoying. rec.models.scale is one of the much better newsgroups when it comes to spam.

Being "UseNet", there are, of course no moderators. Some people like this, some don't. There are a plethora of moderated groups on portals such as Yahoo. Most of the ones I belong to are very friendly places. Even though moderated, one usually gets answers to their questions, in a far more timely fashion, than these unmoderated groups (surprisingly....). Seek them out:

Now, as far as introducing, or discussing politics, on this, or other model-related newsgroups...that tends to come with the territory. Have you ever been to a model-club meeting, or a modeler-gathering, where the bulk of the conversation was *not* linked to politics? Model builders have a grand, enjoyable, time at such get-togethers; where even 9 out of 10 jokes told, are ribald, *and* political in nature. It is all a natural part of a hobby, in which the subject matter is so linked to history, and current events. If you find yourself in the midst of a group of people in which politics does *not* creep into the conversation...RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!...lol...as these people are part of the "uninformed" or care so little about the world in which we live...that they intentionally shy away from said world. (If only these people could be dissuaded from participating in the electoral process...lol).

Well...here is my recommendation; as it is the *epitome* of "fully functional". Just about every feature ever devised, dreamed of, or developed, for a newsreader....is in this application. But be forewarned....it tends to be *too* fully-functioned for many people:

I agree with the idea that you just put certain authors into the killfile and never even see their posts.

The problem with this is that the killfile folks succeed in drawing authors that I would normally read into the fray. For some inane reason, normally rational people will be drawn into these online arguements.

Perhaps they believe that their replies will be the one to show the troll/spammer the error of his way. Truthfully, I find it a waste of time and wish everyone would just ignore the troll or spammer. That way the offending post would disappear quicker and the poster would eventually tire of being ignored.

Unfortunately, I've ended up putting guys I consider "good guys" into the killfile just because they habitually reply to all the rubbish.

Unless there is another Florida fiasco or its equivalent, most of these threads will evaporate in about 21 days. In the meantime, you are allowed (nay, encouraged) to simply killfile threads and correspondents that displease you. As such, you become your own moderator, which is the point of Usenet, after all.

Would love to.

You come here and finish painting the house for me and clear the packed garage back ten feet so that the new garage door and opener can be installed and I'll come clean your screen and build your models. :-)

Killfiles also work. First you kllfile them, then a few others do the same. Pretty soon nobody's coming out to play and they go away. Haven't had the foul taste in my mouth of beaver pizza for a couple of years now.

Another solution that was somewhat obliquely mentioned already deserves revisiting. It is software independent yet requires even LESS action by the reader than any killfile or blocking scheme. Simply rephrase the above thusly:

In the meantime, you are allowed (nay, encouraged) to simply ignore threads and correspondents that displease you.

For many users, however, this solution is completely unworkable. If you are one of these people, please stay home on November 2 - for all our sakes.

FWIW I'm thinking seriously about an early New Years Resolution: "I will completely ignore posts of a political nature". :-)

Well yes, but that requires the subject to be true to the contents. It still amases me how much an american election can fill in several non political newsgroups.
