I'm sure its been discussed before, but what boat did they attempt to pass off as a PT boat?

Indeed. This was posted here 1/16/00 by Dan Stevlingson:
"Boat used for the McHale's Navy show was actually a British Vosper 70-foot MTB. The real PT 73 had been a Higgins 78-foot boat built in 1942, first based in the Aleutians and later the South Pacific with MTB Squadron 13. It was destroyed in 1945 and thus not available for McHale's Navy."
