Porous Primer Problem

Anyone used Alclad over Floquil primer? I like the adhesion of the Floquil stuff, and I think the high from the fumes is better than the acrylic based paints.

Anyway, it seems like the Floquil stuff is very porous- subsequent color coats seem to soak into the primer rather than create a color layer.

Do I need to use the expensive Alclad grey primer under alclad? How about Tamiya's rattle can fine white primer under Alclad?

How about just a fine wet sand of the Floquil before the Alclad?

Thanks.

I always sand primers before putting anything on top. Also, if the primer is too porous, that may mean you are not putting on a thick enough coat.

However, the big thing is that most of the Alclads are supposed to be used over paint- particularly gloss black for the shinier finishes like the chrome and the polished aluminun. One can, however, vary the appearance by putting down the alclad on colors other than black. Also, using a flat or semi-gloss will greatly alter the appearance of the Alclad, but it will be a very weathered metal look, not glossy. For glossy metal, apply over a very glossy black. The glossier the black paint underneath, the shinier the metal appearance.
