Totally OT - Hurricane Hunter Aircraft

One of my coworkers mentioned that he believed the hurricane hunters that fly into the storms taking data on the storm are always propeller driven aircraft. I remember documentaries on the B-29/B-50 units from the fifties and sixties, and I believe P-3 type aircraft (electras) are used now. Anyone know why. I know of 1 boeing 707 (jet) that was modieid to investigate lightening hits in thunderstorms So I wouold assume jets can endure the storms as well or maybe better. My assumption is someone with a general interest in aircraft out there will know the answer - maybe even modeled one.

I believe most of these are C-130s, stationed at Keesler AFB, Biloxi MS. They are transitioning to WC-130Js, if memory serves.

That clicks with my memory, C-130s are the aircraft of choice for Hurricane hunting.
