Zinc Chromate Question

I think this has come up before but I have zinc chromate paint in yellow and green tones. I've always used the green for just about everything - is there a time frame where the yellow tone is "correct"

Wassup?

Yellow ZC was a first protective coat, Green ZG was a second protective coat, different color was a proof of the second coat. Sometimes second coat wasn't applied.

IIRC except Curtisss built P-47G's, YZC has no place in cockpits. Other interior surfaces, yes, but later in WW2, esp. USAAF, some int. surfaces were left in bare metal.

It depends on plane type and manufacturer.

On some later (fifties and up) a/c you could find both in use at the same level. Also, ZnCr has different tones and weathers at diff- erent rates depending on who manufactured the lot at what time. At Minot AFB I have photographed B-52's with gloss light grey, gloss white, green ZnCr of multiple shades and yellow ZnCr of diff- erent shades all on the same a/c. What the other post said is correct. But if you're doing a very used a/c and don't have photos of it in a specific way, you can almost make your choice as to what to use.

Hope that this helps!
