Is it preferrable to save base features (when creating Library Features) to a base folder inside the Design Library or somewhere else?

Hello Mike-
You can create your own folders/sub folders within the Design Library. I find the Design Library useful.

You can also create your own folder of library fetures and call it as you want. Just add it in Tools/Option/Files Locations/Design Library

Thanks Ronan! You don't actually have to save the base do you? In other words, you can open a new part file, create a base, then create and save the library feature, then close the part file without saving. Once the library feature is saved, it's not linked in any way to the original part (.sldprt) file. Correct?

Always save this part as a copy, (to a folder in your design lib), then delete the original. then no references are created. A good habit to get into for design lib parts assemblies etc....
