import diagnosis 2006 vs 2007

I just got a parasolids file for a new job. I was anticipating problems because my customer had made modifications to their customer's part in PowerShape. I often have import problems with files out of PS. Seems there is a big difference between generating geometry good enough to machine vs. generating geometry that SW `likes'.

Anyway SW 2007, sp3.0 encountered bad faces and the diagnostics routine just made them worse-then locked me up when I tried hitting the `heal all' button a second time.

Just for the heck of it, I tried the import in SW 2006, sp4.0. This resulted in a valid model after the second click on that same button. Then I opened the resultant file in 2007 and all is well. Thoughts anyone?

I think you found a good reason to keep older versions around.

If this is your B&B why don't you have a utility to handle imported geometry?

SW changes the level of checking and algorithms from year to year. I suppose there needs to be a way to keep track of these. I think IGES has a whole web site dedicated to trouble geometry, and maybe SW needs the same.

progress is the eager attempt trying to make things as perfect as they already had been in those ol´days! ;-)

Yes-I never am without at least one usable instalation of an older version. Both as a service to my clients who are not always current and for just this sort of thing.

First of all, I am seeing fewer and fewer import issues from year to year. However, I am curious as to what this utility you speak of would consist of. My seat of Cadkey 99R1 is starting to show it's age. It used to be useful to bring problem files into there and run the ACIS healing routine and then bring them back into SW. Hard to justify the cost of a brand new version of KeyCreator just for the occasional import problem.

SW pays lip service to import support, but what they really want (like all other CAD vendors) is for everybody to use their software. No import issue then!

I had my customer output another file for me from PS-Exchange and this last one is a lot cleaner. I think the minor anomalies I am seeing now are related to the CAD system (Catia, I think) being used by the end customer. Which brings back the troubling question of why big brother doesn't seem to want to have anything to do with making things easier for `junior'. Og course, this brings me back to your second point and the fact that KC advertises that it has a direct Catia translator.................

Thanks for the reply, Paul.
